Alvar - Tributo Duradero

About the Artist
Àlvar Suñol Muños-Ramos' uniquely distinctive artwork follows the tradition of other great Spanish painters of the 20th Century, including Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. His technique of layering color and texture within his subjects is also reminiscent of the iconographic style of Marc Chagall. His images express a symbolic and emotional subtext which strike an unusual balance between the literal and the subconscious.

About the Piece
In this stunning example of Àlvar’s uniquely elegant style of painting, three pioneer women representing youth, adulthood, and old age are gathered together at a table to partake of the sweet fruits of the gospel. Behind them stands the ethereal Salt Lake Temple superimposed on
a silver sky. This extraordinary piece is presented in the rich tones and textures for which the artist is renowned, and would make a wonderful addition to the collection of anyone who is new to his work, as well as those who have admired his spectacular images for years. What is so striking about this piece is the very thing that sets Àlvar apart from the rest of the art world. Although he frequently works in oils (a traditionally heavy application,) the surface of his paintings have the translucent quality of a much looser medium. The hair of the eldest woman, for instance, gives the impression of a lighter touch, as if the artist has worked her image in watercolors or even pastels. The same holds true for the dove symbolizing the spirit of God, the women’s clothing, the fruit bowl and the tablecloth which blends seamlessly into the background. At the same time however, there is a remarkable layering of color and texture which gives a sculptural depth to the painting, similar to a technique used by Van Gogh. This enhanced dimensionality is most prominent in the women’s faces and hands, where Àlvar creates a base of dark shadows, and then progressively builds in layers of lighter skin tone, which not only make the highlighted portions stand out visually, but physically as well. The depth of their eyes, the gentle yet elegant placement of their fingers and the folds of their garments all bring the women into a distinctly forward placement that makes them seem to stand in front of the painting itself.
